China Marks 30 Years of Commemoratives
By Kerry Rodgers

Thirty years ago the People's Republic of China issued its first precious metal legal tender commemoratives. These marked the 30th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The 30th anniversary of that coin issue is now being remembered by its own commemorative legal tender coins: one .999 fine silver 10-yuan coin and one .999 fine gold 100-yuan coin. These were released on June 30 by the People's Bank of China.

The common reverse of both coins shows a pair of pandas, the common obverse of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Both design themes have become signatures for PRC bullion issues over the past 25 years.

The 10 yuan weighs in at 1 ounce, is 40 mm in diameter and has a mintage of 300,000. The quarter-ounce 100 yuan is 22 mm across with a mintage of 10,000.

Both coins have been minted by Shenzhen Guobao Mint and are being distributed solely by China Gold. For more information, visit www.chinagoldcoin.net/ENGLISH/index.htm.
