Perth Mint 2009 Bullion Coins
By World Coin News

Australian kangaroo, kookaburra, koala and lunar coins will make up the Perth Mint's 2009 Australian Bullion Coin Program. The coins will be available Oct. 1.

The 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 ounce gold coin reverse design depicts a kangaroo with a joey in its pouch with a representation of the Southern Cross constellation and the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star in the background. The reverse design of the larger 1 kilo, 10 ounce and 2 ounce coins portrays a classic kangaroo design by Dr. Stuart Devlin, jeweller and goldsmith to the queen.

Mintages are 350,000 for the 1 ounce, 100,000 for the 1/2 ounce, 150,000 for the 1/4 ounce, 200,000 for the 1/10 ounce and 200,000 for the 1/20 ounce. The 1 kilo, 10 ounce and 2 ounce coins have unlimited mintages.

This year's releases in the Australian Lunar series of gold coins mark the 2009 Year of the Ox. The design portrays an ox lying on grass with bamboo branches and the Chinese character for "ox" above.

The coin comes in 1 kilo, 10 ounce, 2 ounce, 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce sizes. The 1 ounce coin has a 30,000 mintage limit. There is no mintage limit for the others in the series, but production will close at the end of 2009.

Perth's silver bullion coins are struck from 99.9 percent pure silver. The kookaburra coin is available in 1 kilo, 10 ounce, 2 ounce and 1 ounce versions. The reverse design displays the native Australian kookaburra as well as a "P20" mintmark that signifies that the coin is part of the 20th annual issue. The 1 ounce coin has a mintage limit of 300,000. There is no limit for the others in the series.

The 10, 1 and 1/2 ounce koala coins are another series in the mint's silver bullion program. No mintage limit applies to these coins, but production will close at the end of 2009. A 1 kilo koala coin will also be available. It will be produced through the end of next year with no mintage limit.

The silver lunar coin depicts an ox and calf standing on grass with hills in the background and the Chinese character for "ox" at the top. It is available in 1 kilo and 1/2 kilo versions, as well as in 10, 5, 2, 1 and 1/2 ounce versions. The 1 kilo coin has a mintage limit of 300,000, and no mintage limit applies to the others in the series. Production will end at the end of 2009.
